What affects the cost of medical treatment abroad

We are asked for a price in almost every first message, and we understand why. But we do not publish price lists, and we will not give you a number before our doctors have read your file.

This is not evasion. A figure quoted without seeing the diagnosis is a guess, and a guess that turns out to be wrong after your family has committed is worse than no figure at all.

Why the same procedure has no single price

• The diagnosis, not the procedure name. Two people described as needing heart surgery may need very different operations, with different theatre time and different recovery.
• The stage and the patient's general condition. A patient with diabetes or kidney impairment may need longer preparation and more monitoring.
• The exact technique. A minimally invasive approach and an open operation are not the same cost, and they are not always interchangeable for the same patient.
• Length of stay. This is often the largest variable, and it cannot be fully known in advance.
• The hospital. Costs differ between institutions and cities.
• How many people travel. An attendant's flights, accommodation and visa are real costs.
• What happens on arrival. The receiving hospital assesses you in person, and the plan can change.

What a real quotation should itemise

The figure we return covers the trip, not just the operation:

• The treatment itself, as planned by the accepting hospital
• Accommodation, including the convalescence period after discharge
• Assistance — your personal assistant and interpretation
• Transfers — airport and hospital transport

What is not included

Be clear with whoever is quoting you about what falls outside the figure. Typically this includes flights, complications that extend the admission beyond the planned stay, and treatment that becomes necessary after the in-person assessment differs from the plan.

Getting an accurate figure faster

The single biggest factor is the completeness of your medical file. A case sent with the diagnosis, recent reports, scan images and their written reports can often be quoted in the first reply. A case sent as one sentence usually takes several rounds of questions first.
