What actually distinguishes a suitable hospital from a well-marketed one, and the questions Somali families should ask before committing to treatment abroad.
Families usually start by asking which hospital is best. It is the wrong question, and answering it honestly is more useful than answering it quickly.
There is no single best hospital. There are hospitals that are strong in a particular speciality, for a particular procedure, for a patient in a particular condition — and the same hospital can be the right answer for one case and the wrong one for another.
What actually matters
Volume in your specific procedure
A unit that performs a procedure regularly tends to manage it better than one that performs it occasionally. This is about the specific operation, not the hospital's overall size.
The right level of intensive care
For major cardiac, transplant or neurosurgical work, what happens after the operation matters as much as the operation. Ask what critical care support the unit has.
Whether they will review the file before accepting
A hospital that accepts a case sight unseen, without reading the reports, is telling you something about how it will handle the rest of your treatment.
Honest communication about risk
Be careful with anyone who describes a serious procedure as certain to succeed. Medicine does not work that way, and a unit that talks in guarantees is either overselling or not being asked hard questions.
Whether you can be understood
Consent, symptoms and discharge instructions all depend on language. If nobody in the room speaks your language and no interpreter is provided, that is a clinical risk, not a comfort issue.
Questions worth asking
- How often does this unit perform this specific procedure?
- Who will actually perform it, and what is their experience with it?
- What does the quoted figure include, and what would fall outside it?
- What happens if there is a complication and the stay is extended?
- What follow-up is provided after I return home?
- What will happen if the assessment on arrival differs from the plan?
