Oncology

Diagnosis, staging and treatment of benign and malignant tumours.

Oncology treatment arranged abroad by Akabir Health

Oncology is the branch of medicine that deals with the mechanisms and patterns of tumour development, and with the methods used to prevent, diagnose and treat benign and malignant tumours. At the heart of oncological disease is the uncontrolled proliferation of mutated cells.

Why malignant tumours are dangerous Unlike a benign tumour, a malignant tumour — cancer — has a high rate of mutation and produces metastases that penetrate vital organs, changing their structure and function. The result is organ failure and, as the tumour develops, an increase in toxins in the blood.

Which organs are affected Oncological disease is systemic and can affect any organ or system. Risk is associated with hereditary predisposition, sex and age. Diseases of the skin, lungs and digestive organs appear mostly in younger men, and prostate disease in older men. Younger women are more likely to have cervical, skin, digestive and pulmonary disease, while older women more often have disease of the mammary gland. Leukaemia and lymphoma usually appear in children.

Lung disease carries the highest mortality of all oncological conditions, regardless of age or sex.

Symptoms In the early stages, oncological disease usually progresses without visible clinical signs. The symptoms that prompt a visit to a doctor tend to appear at later stages — which is exactly why screening and check-up programmes matter.
