Orthopaedics

Orthopaedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine disease, sports injuries, degenerative disease, infection, tumours and congenital disorders.

The name comes from two ancient Greek words: orthos, meaning straight, and paidion, meaning child. Although orthopaedics brings trauma and wear-and-tear problems to mind most readily, congenital skeletal abnormalities such as scoliosis of the spine and other bony deformities are an equally important part of the field.

Because we must move to live, the musculoskeletal system is one of the most heavily used systems in the body, which brings wear-and-tear problems especially in later life. Beyond normal wear, people who exercise intensively may sustain sports injuries such as rotator cuff tears or meniscal problems in the knee. Trauma from any cause is another major source of serious orthopaedic problems.

The orthopaedic surgeons we work with use current techniques and technology to improve care for people with musculoskeletal problems, from diagnosis through to treatment. Subspecialties include adult reconstruction, paediatrics, sports medicine, trauma, spine, foot, hand, shoulder, elbow and orthopaedic oncology.

Where it suits the case better, we also arrange arthroscopic shoulder and knee treatment. Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure performed with an arthroscope driven into the joint through a micro-incision.
